Deliver Virtual Machine Mobility Through Overlays
Network overlays are an important use case in software-defined networking. An overlay is a virtual network (configured and controlled via software) that can be used to dynamically manage traffic and tenants across the same set of physical resources. Overlays are commonly used today for hybrid cloud VPNs, disaster recovery (DR) scenarios and interconnecting multiple physical data center locations.
There are several approaches to network overlays that use different network virtualization systems. Pica8 products can be used as a common overlay tunnel endpoint across these different systems.
We leverages hardware-accelerated Open vSwitch (OVS) to support the standard OVSDB API and OpenFlow. This makes it easy for users to program overlays tunnels using a single tool set across different cloud environments, including VMware NSX, Midokura, OpenStack, and OpenContrail.
